Kathryn
Coombes was born in Wakefiled and began piano lessons with Kenneth Swanson.
She studied music at Sheffield University where she had the privilege to continue
her piano studies with Danielle Salamon. As an undergraduate Kathryn performed
in premieres of music by David Harold Cox and developed her interest in early
twentieth century piano music.
She was awarded the Mrs Stewart Blake Recital Prize and an ISM Young Performer's Award. Having graduated, she trained as a secondary school teacher at London University, subsequently gaining teaching posts in Salisbury, and, following her marriage, Accrington and York. As a concerto soloist Kathryn has performed John Ireland's 'Piano Concerto', Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' and also performs as a soloist, accompanist and conductor.
Currently Kathryn is a well-known piano teacher in York, teaching at Bootham, The Mount and St. Peter's Schools. She is often seen accompanying The Mount School Choir, conducting the St. Olave's School Junior Choir and she organises regular Charity Concerts for her pupils.
