APPEAL TO MUSIC LOVERS.

The committees of the York Musical Society and the York Symphony Orchestra have been compelled to abandon their usual programmes, because they cannot command either their usual subscriptions or secure a hall because of military occupation, were it possible to give concerts. There is, however, a widespread feeling that musical activities should not cease, and the members of the Chorus and of the Symphony Orchestra are therefore continuing their weekly rehearsals, the cost of which as in other years are being borne by the members. They are at present engaged on Brahms' "Requiem," which they intend giving in York Minster on Tuesday, 15th Dec. The work selected is peculiarly appropriate for the present time, and will no doubt be heard in all its beauty, solemnity and helpfulness. In order to meet the expenses for professional vocalists, professional members of the orchestra and other charges, an appeal is being made to the music lovers in York for donations. These expenses it is expected will amount to about £100, and already several donations have been given or are promised. Included among these are donations from the Lord Mayor (Coun. J. Bowes Morrell) and the Very Rev. the Dean of York. Any surplus which might accrue will we understand be devoted to War Relief Funds, though the committee urge the obligation of helping the professional musical class who are suffering much distress because of their many cancelled engagements. Donations will be gladly received by E. M. Smith for the Symphony Orchestra, and Mr. Arthur Peters, the hon. treasurer of the Musical Society. Sufficient space in the Minster is to be provided for all who contribute.
