YORK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
for Octr. 15/1915
A Meeting of the Committee of the York Sympony Orchestra was held in Dr.
Bairstow's Music Room on October l5th, 1915.
Present:
Dr. Bairstow in the Chair.
Miss Ramsey, Mr. Hey, Mr. Fryer, Mr. McLellan, Dr. Smith (Hon. Sec.); and Mr.
K.E.T.Wilkinson subsequently.
The Minutes of the last meeting were taken as read.
Dr. Bairstow introduced a discussion on the proposed amalgamation of the York
Symphony Orchestra with the York Musical Society, on the following lines:-
Y.M.S. to take over the Y.S.O. with its debts, properties and other assets, the
Y.S.O. to have half the representation on the new Committee;
A large General Committee (A York Music Committee) to be formed, including
persons interested in music, but not necessarily vocalists or instrumentalists;
This Committee would run a series of choral, orchestral and instrumental
concerts each Winter;
A small Executive Committee would consist half of choral and half of orchestral
representatives;
The new Joint Society would run (a) a performing orchestra of selected
amateurs, assisted at the Concerts by professionals as required; (b) and, if
possible, a probationary orchestra, whose members would be promoted to the
performing orchestra according to merit.
The proposals above outlined were approved by the Meeting in general, and Mr.
K.E.T. Wilkinson, Mr. Herbert Hey, and Dr. Smith were requested to represent
the York Symphony orchestra on a small joint Sub-Committee, to be appointed in
conjunction with the York Musical Society, to work out the details of such
proposed amalgamation, as soon as the times proved opportune.
