Symphony sign-off
YORK Symphony Orchestra‘s
winter concert last Saturday at the University of York’s Jack Lyons Concert
Hall opened with a salute to its president, Francis Jackson.
His overture, Brigantia, was written in 1970 for the orchestra, which he also
conducted from 1947 to 1980.
In Elgar‘s Sea Pictures, there was some lovely singing from mezzo-soprano
Olivia Ray. And, after a drinks interval spent in a very crowded bar area, the
orchestra signed off for the year with some lighter pieces of Delius, Prokofiev
and Hely-Hutchinson.
