Orchestra tunes up for centenary concert

CONCERT: One hundred years ago, Mr Tertius Noble of York formed the York Symphony Orchestra. Tomorrow, the orchestra celebrates its century by giving a grand centenary concert at Central Hall, University of York. A much-loved institution in the city the orchestra has played with famous names such as Julian Lloyd Webber during its illustrious history and become hotbed of local talent. Former members include professional cellist Rachel Burbridge and conductor Paul Mann.

Tomorrow, the centrepiece of the 8pm programme will be Bizet’s Carmen Suite No 1, complemented by Wagner’s Overture, Die Meistersinger and choruses from Tannhauser and The Flying Dutchman; Rossini’s La Boutique Fantasque (The Magic Toyshop); Alto Rhapsody by Brahms; the Hungarian March from The Damnation Of Faust by Berlioz and Walton’s Crown Imperial.

The orchestra will be conducted by Leslie Bresnen, led by Claire Jowett and joined by the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and contralto soloist Jacqueline Edwards.

York Symphony Orchestra tunes up for its special centenary concert with conductor Les Bresnen

FINAL rehearsals are taking place for the 100th anniversary concert of York Symphony Orchestra on Saturday.

The orchestra held its first concert in 1899 when it was formed by York man and Minster organist Tertius Noble.

Although the first concert made only five shillings, the orchestra survived to become a much-loved institution, thanks to the commitment of generations of music lovers in the city.
During Its history, the orchestra has played for the Prince of Wales, supported a variety of charitable causes and has helped encourage local talent such as Rachel Burbrldge, now a professional concert cellist and Paul Mann who is now assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.

The concert takes place on Saturday, June26, at the Central Hall at the University of
York.

The programme will include Bizet’s Carmen and Rossini’s The Magic Toyshop and the orchestra will be joined byYork Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and the contralto Jacqueline Edwards.
