Fisher solo at university
PETER Fisher will be the soloist for Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy
for Violin and Orchestra in tomorrow’s spring concert by York Symphony
Orchestra at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York. Peter was
the fourth prize winner In the Alexandre Glasunov Violin Competition in Paris
and Is one of the leading British violinists of his generation.
“We’re delighted to have a player of Peter’s standard join
us for this concert,” says conductor Alasdair Jamieson. “The Scottish
Fantasy for violin and orchestra is often overshadowed by Bruch’s more
popular works, but this is a beautiful piece with traditional Scottish melodies
providing the core material for each movement, and I’m sure our audience
will enjoy the performance.” The 8pm programme also includes Mozart’s
Overture to The Magic Flute, Grieg’s Wedding Day At Troldhaugen and Danish
composer Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No 2, The Four Temperaments.
“We’re marking the centenary of Grieg’s death with an orchestral
arrangement of a work inspired by his home In the Westland of Norway,”
says Alasdair. “The Nielsen symphony is a stirring piece of work with
great contrasts of emotion. Each of the four movements describes the four temperaments,
which In bygone days were thought to govern basic human psychology: Choleric,
Phlegmatic, Melancholic and Sanguine.
“While writing the piece, Nielsen realised that each temperament contains
elements of the other three, and the audience will be able to hear the different
characteristics in each movement. It’s a challenging work and l think
it will provide a thrilling finale.”
