YORK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

(Affiliated to the British Music Society)

Season, 1926-27

TWENTY-EIGHTH SEASON, 1926-27.

The Committee of the York Symphony Orchestra has again decided to give only one Concert this season, and this will take place on Wednesday, February 9th.

The programme given below, will it is sure, be looked forward to with interest. The Orchestra will be composed of about 60 instrumentalists and includes local professional players and several members of the Leeds Symphony Orchestra who have been engaged to assist the regular members.

The Society has suffered a great loss by the resignation of Mr. H. A. Bennett who finds that he cannot continue his work as Hon. Conductor owing to increasing calls on his time in Doncaster. Mr. John W. Cowper, who has been chosén in his stead to direct the affairs of the Society, has been a member of the Orchestra since its formation, and he will be remembered as a distinguished violinist by his playing of the Beethoven Concerto at this Society's Concert in 1925.

The vocalist will be Miss Esther Groves, a member of the noted local musical family, who. has lately completed her training at the Royal College of Music, and this will be her first public appearance in the city of her birth.

The novelty at the Concert will be the performance of the "Grieg A minor Piano Concerto." The solo part will be played by a Waddington Auto-de-Luxe Piano, which will exactly reproduce the interpretation of the world famous BACKHAUS. The experiment has been made by Sir Henry J. Wood at Queen's Hall, and by many other important musical organisations, and it proved a very remarkable success.

The Committee again appeal for a large number of subscribers to support the fine educational work of the Society, so that these Concerts may remain a permanent feature in the musical life of the City.
