The York Symphony Orchestra, which was founded by Mr. T. Tertius Noble, has had a very successful career, and before Mr. Noble left York had reached a very high standard of efficiency for an amateur organization. With the advent of Dr. Bairstow a scheme of re-organization was entered upon, which has proved to be very satisfactory, and it is matter for congratulation of both the conductors, Dr. Bairstow and Miss Knocker, and the instrumentalists, that the previous high standard has not only been maintained, but even carried further.
The programmes have been of an exacting character, but the performances have kept pace with the increased requirements.
The rather unsatisfactory feature of the last year's working is the treasurer's report of a deficit. This, however, it is hoped will prove but a temporary condition.
Next season there will again be two concerts, one in November and the other in March. Mr. Frederick Dawson, the greatest English pianist, will appear at the first concert.
