Leader of YSO for 26 years retiring
THE LEADER of York Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Geoffrey Stevens, is retiring after 26 years in the .post, it was announced at the orchestra's annual meeting, in the Tempest Anderson Hall, last night.
Dr. Francis Jackson, organist of York Minster and conductor of the orchestra, today paid tribute to Mr, Steven’s work.
“He has been leader all the time I have been conducting the orchestra, and has done a splendid job.
"He has been tremendously loyal and always ready to help. He has taken rehearsals when I have been away, and I know the orchestra have always enjoyed working with him. I am glad to say he will be carrying on as a member of the orchestra."
Successor
Mr. Stevens' successor is Mr. Ronald Easey, conductor of the York Schools Orchestra and a member of the Symphony Orchestra for a number of years.
Mrs. Grace Stevens is to be aided as secretary of the orchestra by Mrs. Sue Wright, who is now orchestral secretary.
The orchestra's programme for the next season includes a concert in the Lyons Concert Hall, York, University, in November, and one in the .Minster next May.
