Letter from a member of the YMS, 1915

YMS (1) 4, Goodramgate
York
July 13 - 15.

Dear Dr. Smith,
I am perfectly ashamed of myself for neglecting to reply to your letter but must plead pressure of business - I have simply had to let private correspondence go by the board - we are suffering like most people just now from "short handedness" to coin a word, with a result you can imagine, I'm sure.
Well, Doctor, after this preamble and asking your forgiveness, - to the subject of you letter:
With regard to the

YMS (2) reception of your remarks at the meeting - it did not strike me that there was a want of appreciation or that your ideas were coldly received - as a matter of fact it takes a lot of doing to rouse any amount of enthusiasm at a meeting of this sort. perhaps it is the smallness of the numbers which makes the members somewhat shy of showing their feelings.
As [to] the little chat we had afterwards, I really think you gathered a wrong impression if you think that the "Competence" of the
YMS (3) Symphony Orchestra was questioned. It would appear to me to be the last thing in the world one would think of suggesting. Considering that we are all agreed that the work of the Orchestra is simply excellent and we, as a Society, are deeply indebted to the Y.S.O. for their splendid help + participation in our Concerts. Really, Doctor, I do think you have got a wrong impression; as to my mind it was purely a matter of policy, shall I say business policy, that was being discussed, and any opinions which were expressed
YMS (4) as to the advisability or otherwise of uniting the two societies were I hope, suggested in a perfectly friendly manner. I should be very sorry to think that you had an idea that we were in any way ungrateful for all the splendid work that has been done by your society, or that we were lacking in appreciation of the ability of the members of the Orchestra.

With kind regards

I am Yours sincerely
W.E.Saville
