Sir,If you will allow me, I should like to draw the attention of your readers to the coming performance of Brahms' "Requiem," which is to be given by the above society, in York Minster, on December 15th.
May I venture to hope that it will receive every support from our citizens?
Of course, at such a time as the present, people cannot afford to spend money merely on pleasure, but in this case all should remember the many professional singers and orchestral players who are seriously affected financially by the war, and and some of whom the York Musical Society wishes to help.
Subscribers of half-a-crown, or more, will be admitted to a reserved area in the Minster, and I understand that arrangements are now being made for subscribers of one shilling to enter the building before the general public. Surely, in this case, all can do something to help. The work is a most beautiful one, and, sung in our glorious Minster, is a thing not easily forgotten.
As a member of the chorus, I should like to express my very great appreciation
of the splendid way in which Dr. Bairstow conducts and teaches us. I appeal to
the people of York to come in their hundreds on the evening of December 15th,
to support him in his effort to give pleasure to the music-loving public, and
help to those who are in need. I am, sir, yours faithfully,
A MEMBER OF THE CHORUS.
