Future concerts
(unless otherwise indicated, all concerts take place in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall
University
of York, at 8 p.m.)

Saturday 26th March 2011, at 8 p.m.
Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall,
University of York

Copland: An Outdoor Overture
Sibelius:
Karelia Suite
Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue (Soloist: Kathryn Coombes, piano)
Dvořák : Symphony no. 8 in G major, op. 88

"Gentlemen, in Bohemia the trumpets never call to battle - they always call to the dance!" - so said the conductor Raphael Kubelik when rehearsing the fanfare in Dvořák's sunny Eighth Symphony. Elsewhere in this programme, big country skies contrast with the more urban landscape evoked by Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Saturday 2nd July 2011, at 8 p.m.
Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall,
University of York

Debussy: Printemps
Khachaturian: Masquerade Suite
Barber: Adagio for Strings
Ravel: Pavane pour une infante défunte
Borodin: Symphony no. 2 in B minor

Light and shade in music both limpidly brilliant and refelectively elegiac. Debussy's rarely heard Printemps includes a piano duet and a harp in its orchestration to suggest the delicate sensuality of springtime. Both Ravel and Barber create a more prayerful atmosphere that is dispelled in the high spirits of our Russian offerings.
